What is a food phobia?
The term food phobia refers to when someone is unable to eat certain foods. It is more than being a fussy eater. It is more than not liking certain foods and choosing other healthy options. Most food phobics would tell you they wish they could eat the food that they feel they cannot. Most food phobics are not making the healthy choice but avoiding foods that they know would be good to include in their daily diet. For example, I have seen quite a few clients who ‘can't' eat fruit or vegetables and are living on diets of chips and maybe one or two other things.
In many cases, clients that come to see me have booked a session because their doctor has told them they have to start eating whatever food they are avoiding as it is negatively impacting their health.
Most of these people tell me that they gag when they try. Many tell me they have panic symptoms just from thinking about eating that offending food. Dry mouth, sickness, heart palpitations are just some of the horrible experiences my clients report they have suffered just from thinking about a particular food.
Where Did the Phobia Come From?
In some cases, my food phobic clients have told me they remember an incident from years ago, typically in childhood, when they were forced to eat the 'offending' food and they gagged on it. They tell me, since then, they haven't been able to eat that food. On occasions I am told that they got really sick for some reason and having just eaten that particular food they never wanted to eat it again as they associate the taste and smell of it with that time of sickness.
You know, it really doesn't matter where the phobia came from! That is in the past. The trouble is carrying the past into the present when it is possible to leave it behind and have the freedom to choose what you eat - based, not on fear, but on good healthy choice – real choice!
Is There Anything That Can Be Done About A Phobia Of Food?
The short answer is Yes!
Instead of feeling out of control and unable to make a conscious choice you can reprogramme your unconscious and conscious mind – and once you know how, you can quite easily change this old response into a comfortable, free response which feels under control.
When I work with someone to help them do just this it usually only takes one or two sessions and, abracadabra!... The phobia becomes something you used to do.

The Trouble with Phobias…
…is that they sometimes spread. Sometimes my clients tell me that they started off just not being able to eat one kind of fruit (or vegetable or meat) and somehow it has spread so now they can't eat many different kinds of fruit for example.
Sometimes people worry that because there are many different foods that they ‘can't' eat, it will be more difficult to help them make the desired change.
Actually the reverse is true.
By using the same mechanism that spread the phobia – the mind's amazing ability to generalize- once you have discovered how easy it is to relax and enjoy eating something you haven't been able to eat for years, your mind can generalize it so you find that miraculously, all the foods that used to be impossible to eat are now also easy to swallow - and can be enjoyed.
How do you treat a food phobia?
The techniques of NLP and hypnosis are wonderfully effective. By learning how to reprogramme your thinking and feeling you will quickly learn how to tell your body what you want and have it respond.
Some people worry that if they come for a session, I will have control over them and they will be totally asleep as I get them to do things without their knowledge or agreement.
It couldn't be more different from that! The way my clients describe sessions are with words like "really enjoyable", "amazingly easy", "I felt more in control than I was previously and I am keeping this great feeling", "it was so interesting", and happily they also say "it was fun".
My success rate probably isn't 100% as everyone is unique and different. I don't really keep count. However, it is probably well into the 80s%. All of my clients are happy with the way they have been looked after by me and feel they have had the best treatment available.
